Review Film Don’t Worry Darling (2022)

Florence Pugh is now one of the brightest young Hollywood actresses. After appearing as Yelena Belova in Black Widow (2021), Pugh returned to the big screen again in the psychological thriller film Don’t Worry, Darling. In this film, Pugh is paired with One Direction personnel who are now quite active in acting, namely Harry Styles.

Don’t Worry, Darling was directed by Olivia Wilde, a figure who so far is better known as an actress. Don’t Worry, Darling is Wilde’s second film as a director after working on Booksmart (2019). Apart from directing, Wilde also co-starred in his own film, playing Bunny. The film also stars Gemma Chan, Chris Pine, Nick Kroll, and other actors.

Don’t Worry Darling tells the story of a married couple named Jack and Alice Chambers, who live happily in a luxurious estate. One day, Alice went to a forbidden place for the wives who live in the housing. Since coming to that place, Alice has realized that something is wrong with her life and everything around her.

Don’t Worry, Darling movie review

1. The climax has an interesting plot twist but feels rushed.

For those who have seen the trailers and various promotions for Don’t Worry, Darling, you are sure that this film is set in the 1950s. But about half an hour later, towards the end of the film, you will find a quite unexpected plot twist. Unfortunately, this plot twist just appeared too close to the ending of the film.

Plot twists that only appear at the end of the film are common in the world of cinema. But in the case of Don’t Worry, Darling, the plot twist, which was too close to the ending, finally made the climax of this film run in a hurry. As a result, there are still many questions about this film that have not been answered thoroughly.

Most of the film is spent showing Alice’s confusion about her life, which tends to be long-winded. The audience’s curiosity was built up for too long just to see the climax, which was too short. In fact, this film’s plot twist has a lot of potential if only the climax portion were more numerous. If Don’t Worry, Darling is successful enough, it feels necessary to make this film a sequel to answer the things that were not completed in the previous film.

2. Beautiful visuals with quite a score to make you nervous

The film might seem slow to some. However, it cannot be denied that Don’t Worry, Darling displays visuals that are so pleasing to the eye. The beauty of the cinematography created by cinematographer Matthew Libatique looks so consistent from the beginning to the end of the film. The film’s beautiful cinematography is also supported by a set design that is so intentional.

Don’t Worry Darling’s production design, makeup, and wardrobe teams certainly deserve a thumbs up. They succeeded in displaying the extravagant feel of the 1950s era, which further supports the beauty of this film’s cinematography. The design of the setting where the film takes place and the various clothes used by the actors have succeeded in becoming sweeteners.

One of the elements that makes the thriller feel quite real in Don’t Worry, Darling is the film’s score. The score sounds quite unique and not too exaggerated to create a tense atmosphere. The simplicity of the score is quite successful in building the audience’s anxiety during the course of the film.

3. Florence Pugh is the main character in this film.

In terms of the game world, Florence Pugh can be considered the main carry in Don’t Worry, Darling. Without his brilliant acting, this film might be even less attractive. So animated, Harry Styles, who became Pugh’s opponent, seemed less successful at keeping up with him. Fortunately, Styles’ share of appearances is also less than that of Pugh.

Those of you who have watched Pugh’s films before must have known how great Pugh is at showing various expressions. Through his expressions, Pugh manages to invite the audience to feel Alice’s happiness and frustration. For the actors who play supporting characters, they perform quite well in their respective portions.
