Since initially revealing their aspirations for a Minecraft movie in 2014, Warner Brothers and Mojang have swapped teams numerous times throughout the years. Of course, the plot has never been a focus of the game Minecraft itself. Instead, it is an open-world building and survival game in which players build sophisticated and detailed structures while attempting to fend off attacks from monsters like creepers, zombies, and skeletons. The numerous play modes in Minecraft let players concentrate on the parts of the game they like best, whether that’s cooperative play, survival, or building.
The Nether, a perilous and terrible world, and The End, a collection of floating islands watched over by the vicious Ender Dragon, are two notable places despite the game’s absence of a plot. Additionally, it has certain well-known foes like Endermen and Creepers. We anticipate the film will want to emphasize these venerable and recognisable villains.

Who Are the Minecraft Movie’s Creative Team?
Even more changes have taken place behind the scenes than there have been to the Minecraft cast. The Minecraft movie’s original director was Shawn Levy, who also directed Night at the Museum, The Adam Project, and Free Guy. Kieran and Michele Mulroney (Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows) wrote the screenplay. But in 2014, all three of them quit the project, citing “creative differences” with the videogame’s developers Mojang. A few weeks after his departure, Levy discussed the project in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. He described it as an action movie with “a bit of a Goonies flair.”
Nearly two years later, it revealed that Rob McElhenney (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), who co-wrote the script with Jason Fuchs (Wonder Woman), will directing the movie. The movie’s producer, Roy Lee, said in a 2016 interview with Collider that the movie would have centered on the idea of player agency and what that implies in a virtual open-world experience. The project very close to realized, according to McElhenney, who discussed it with Josh Horowitz on the “Happy Sad Confused Podcast,” but it realized that his version of the project was no longer consistent with the studio’s vision after Greg Silverman replaced as studio head by Toby Emmerich.

Peter Sollett (Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist) was hired to helm the movie a few months later, in the early months of 2019. The female lead in Sollett’s adaptation of the story would have faced an Ender Dragon. A few months later, it revealed that the Nee Brothers would no longer be writing the script and that Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Allison Schroeder (Hidden Figures) would be taking over.
Obviously, this has now altered, and Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) ultimately chosen to helm the picture. Chris Bowman and Hubbel Palmer, who previously collaborated with Hess on the 2016 heist comedy film Masterminds, wrote the writing for the movie.
When Will the Minecraft Movie Be Available?
The release date for the Minecraft movie has changed numerous times. Rob McElhenney’s version originally scheduled for May 24, 2019, however after his departure and the addition of Sollett, the release date changed to March 4, 2022, before dropped from the calendar. Warner Bros. just disclosed a new April 4, 2025 release date for the movie. Hopefully everything will go smoothly and the movie will this time release on time.
