What happened to The Simpsons Movie 2? After years spent in television, TheSimpsons finally got their own movie in 2007 and – surprise, surprise – it a huge hit. Given the success of the first film, conversation about The Simpsons Movie 2 has increased over the past decade, and now there’s reason to hope a sequel to The Simpsons Movie will happen evenly.
The Simpsons Movie follows the titular family, the hues as they play lams. The Simpsons framed for an environmental disaster which wasn’t carried out (well, sort of), resulting in a dome being placed over the city of Springfield because it had become so dangerous. In between Homer and his brood trying to save the day, there’s plenty of running gags and cutscenes, including a very memorable appearance by Spider-Pig.
As of July 2019, here are all the possible updates on The Simpsons Movie and Simpsons Movie 2, as told through interviews, box office receipts, and the films themselves.

The Simpsons Movie Was A Success
The Simpsons Movie was a success. With an estimated budget of $75 million, it generated $527 million worldwide, with the high majority coming from overseas. It’s a testament to how much international audiences love The Simpsons and will watch them even after the show has slumped. From a financial standpoint, there’s no reason not to make a sequel.
The Simpson Movie 2 May Be Early Development
Despite the success of The Simpsons Movie, it reported that there would not be a Simpsons Movie sequel for many years. Things changed in 2010 when The Simpsons writer/producer James L. Brooks shared an obvious change about a sequel film, telling Coming Soon, “It was a huge success and we were very open to it and we had an initial idea if we wanted to do it, but series always comes first with us.” This repeated several times over the following years, with creatives interested but not committed.
Then, in 2018, The Wall Street Journal reported that, in addition to films for Bob’s Burgers and Family Guy, a second Simpsons film was in development. There have been no further discussions since then and it’s unclear how Disney’s purchase of Fox will affect this project: The Mouse House has canceled several projects.
The Simpsons Movie 2 Can Follow Whatever Story He Wants
The Simpsons Movie ends with the Simpsons saving the day. Homer manages to destroy the dome with the help of Bart, the motorcycle and the bomb, and Springfield returns to his daily activities. The film ends with the usual brawl between Homer and Bart, signaling to the audience that things are back to normal.
The Simpsons has never been tied to one consistent story arc, whether it in a television season or in a movie. The plot of The Simpsons Movie so contained that it doesn’t need to continued in the second film. However, equally odd stories can certainly be made.
The Simpsons TV Series Is Still Going Strong
Fox renewed The Simpsons for seasons 31 and 32 in February 2019. This unprecedented extension earned The Simpsons a spot on Fox’s television schedule throughout the 2020-2021 season. It had previously speculated the Disney-Fox deal could affect The Simpsons’ future, with Disney ending television run after 30 years on the air and moving it into syndication. If that’s the case, it won’t be for a long time.
So even if The Simpsons Movie 2 doesn’t end, fans shouldn’t disappointed. Seasons 31 and 32 mean there will be even more Simpsons stories to tell. Each past season had 20 to 23 episodes, meaning viewers will have at least 40 new episodes to enjoy over the next two years. And, of course, the full series of The Simpsons will be available on Disney+ at launch.
