Synopsis Akeelah and the Bee
The film Akeelah and the Bee tells the story of an 11-year-old black girl who lives in South Los Angeles, United States named Akeelah Anderson, played by Keke Palmer. With the experience of losing her father at a very young age, and her mother, Tanya Anderson (Angela Basset), who was very busy caring for her four children, Akeelah never felt like she had a place to valued. He grew up without self-confidence, shy and closed. Not to mention the inadequate education in the South Los Angeles area where Akeelah lives. Crenshaw Middle School where Akeelah attended school, is a school that has very destroyed in terms of facilities.
However, Akeelah is a smart kid at school, especially in English. But the guarantee of being a smart and genius child makes Akeelah feel left out by her friends. A smart child like Akeelah is tormented by having to hide her potential for fear of considered strange by her friends.
Until one day his teacher forced him to take part in a spelling bee contest which was a prestigious competition in America to carry the name of his school. For children in America, being one of the participants in spelling competitions is something to be proud of. Because not all children in America can follow this competition. It takes steps towards a national level spelling competition. How many words in English can you spell well, besides that the participants are asked to spell words that difficult and rarely known by many people.
Akeelah initially refused
At first Akeelah refused, she felt she couldn’t win and was too stupid to follow her. But finally, at the coercion of his school principal, he followed suit and won the competition easily and has the right to move forward with the name of his school at the regional level.
It was here that he met Javier Mendez (J.R. Villarreal) and Dylan Chu (Sean Michael Afable), two Woodland Hills private school kids who already had a lot of experience in spelling bee contests. In fact, Dylan has twice won second place at the National level. Here Akeelah and Javier supposed to be opponents, but become good friends in this film. Akeelah’s journey to advance to the National level with the help of a spelling coach named Dr. Joshua Larabee played by (Laurence Fishburne).
Help from Dr. Larabee
Akeelah trained well and hard. Dr. Larabee helps Akeelah not only in terms of learning new words, but also helps her find what she wants, which is to set a goal to overcome her fear in order to win the race. Going to the National level spelling competition is not easy. There are many obstacles that Akeelah has to face. Akeelah had given up, and was desperate when Dr. Larabee decides she doesn’t want to train Akeelah anymore and her mother refuses her permission. When the National Competition took place, Akeelah had to beat Dylan as a tough participant who won second place last year.
The conflict started to peak when Akeelah learned that Dylan was often pressured by his father to win this year’s spelling contest, because this was the last chance for Dylan to take part in this competition. This is where Akeelah’s inner conflict occurs, does she want to give up so Dylan will win this race or does she keep moving forward to achieve her dream?
