Movies Like Jumanji – One of the greatest kids’ movies of all time, if not the greatest movie of all time, is the original Jumanji, starring Robin Williams. The 1995 movie immersed viewers in a time- and space-defying board game for an emotional journey. It was a classic film that everyone who grew up in the 1990s knew inside and out. This pioneer laid the stage before CGI became what it is today, and films like Harry Potter and The Hunger Games owe a lot to him for that.
The movie was a hit, but it wasn’t until more than 20 years later that Jumanji received an unauthorized sequel in the form of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which was then followed by even more sequels and updated the old tale. The quest at the center of the movie remained the same even though the cast of characters changed.
We’ve compiled a list of action movies like Jumanji that you may check out in advance if you enjoy the excitement of these films and want to experience it more often in your life and on TV. They all in some way relate to the sentimental movie and create the tension you’re searching for.

Movies Like Jumanji
1. The Haunted Mansion (2003)
The Eddie Murphy-starring movie, which is based on the Disney attraction, is so much fun. The Haunted Mansion is on the terrifying side of playful, whereas Jumanji may be a little more on the suspenseful side of scary. It’s lots of humor and lightheartedness, as you would expect from a Murphy-directed film, but don’t worry—the spirits will still attempt to get you!
2. Zathura (2005)
Though not explicitly mentioned in the Jumanji universe, Zathura does exist there. Chris Van Allsburg followed up on his Jumanji narrative with Zathura, which had the same basic premise but used different youngsters and a new setting. Similar to Jumanji, the youngsters in Zathura must cooperate to figure out how to return home after playing a game that transports them into space.
3. Night at the Museum (2006)
This advice applies to the entire series, although the first episode is the actual standout. The Ben Stiller comedy Night at the Museum is tense and silly fun. Stiller portrays a nightly guard at a museum who learns that the displays come to life at night. This picture features many of the same action-packed scenes as any of the Jumanji movies, and Stiller pulls off the perfect amount of hilarious timing.
4. Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008)
The location of this movie, starring the charming Brendan Fraser, actually makes it feel quite a little like Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. You guessed it, the characters travel to the Earth’s center to find a lost family member, so expect thrills, tension, and crazy scenery similar to what the team encounters in the 2017 Jumanji movie. They still have an issue to solve even if there isn’t a game being played in this movie.
5. The Spiderwick Chronicles (2008)
The main character in this action film is Freddie Highmore. Jumanji feels a lot like this, but with more fantasy. It’s a touch less terrifying than Jumanji, making it a good choice for young viewers. Three kids find themselves peeping into a remote realm of fascinating creatures.
6. Where the Wild Things Are (2009)
Based on the well-known children’s novel of the same name, Max feels isolated and alone in his own world, so he flees to another. Max ends up at a remote location that is something out of his wildest dreams, much like how the children in Jumanji manage to escape; after all, there’s where the wild things are. But compared to the first Jumanji, this film undoubtedly leans more toward the family-friendly side of the adventure spectrum.
