Synopsis

Michael Oher or known as Big Mike (Quinton Aaron) is a 17 year old boy who has a pretty difficult life. His biological mother was caught in a drug case when he was little so he and his other siblings were separated to be protected by the state.

When he was considered old enough, Mike was finally sent to a school to continue his education. Even though he received an education, he did not want to return home and chose to live on the streets.

Sometimes at the school gym or at the laundry. Once, when a basketball game was over, Mike was going to go to the school gym to rest, but on the way he met Leigh Anne Tuohy (Sandra Bullock).

Leigh Anne found it odd that the gym was closed considering it was already evening. How shocked Leigh Anne was when she found out Mike’s real reason for going there was because he didn’t have a place to live. Without hesitation, she brought Mike home to live with her family.

The Tuohy family is a super rich family. They have businesses everywhere including fast food restaurants. This made Leigh Anne not mind helping Mike.

More than that, Leigh Anne felt sorry for Mike who was alone. As a mother of 2 children, Mike has become like his son. This has even become a debate for the jetset class mothers who are Leigh Anne’s friends.

Big Mike

Big Mike is a black boy, while Leigh Anne’s is a white family. Although at first Leigh Anne didn’t mind about it, Leigh Anne also wondered whether her children were comfortable with Mike in their home; not because Mike is black but more Mike is a stranger in their home.

Leigh Anne’s kids didn’t mind at all because Mike was such a good person. Mike even saved Leigh Anne’s son Sean (Jae Head) from a car accident, making Leigh Anne love Mike even more like her own son.

At school, Leigh Anne also pays attention to educational developments from Mike. All of Mike’s scores dropped except for 1. The highest score he got was in the ‘protective instinct’ category. This made Leigh Anne understand why Mike was always there to protect her while she was taking Mike home and protecting Leigh Anne’s family.

Mike’s protective instinct led him to join the football extracurricular at his school. He doesn’t play very well, but after Leigh Anne advises that all his teams are Mike’s family, Mike becomes unrivaledly violent. He fights anyone who dares to disturb his ‘family’.

Again, Leigh Anne made Mike’s life change for the umpteenth time. Helping Mike in his education by hiring mentors, opening his mind to the family, and teaching Mike good things. Mike has now become a member of the Tuohy family after Leigh Anne and her husband adopted him.

Seeing Mike’s skill at playing football, many campuses asked Mike to join them. The Tuohys asked Mike to take the opportunity to join the University of Mississippi. But this decision actually led to Mike being summoned by the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) investigators.

Trouble Arises

The team of investigators kept asking questions about why Mike had to enter the University of Mississippi. This made Mike think that all this time he had been indirectly asked to follow the wishes of the Tuohy family. Mike is angry at Leigh Anne and causes a scene after he decides to return to Mike’s house.

Mike seems to have lost his identity. He pondered many times and finally returned to the Tuohy family. Leigh Anne then told him that he shouldn’t have asked for this request from Mike.

Mike can choose to go to any university he chooses. But after receiving an explanation from Leigh Anne, Mike still chose the University of Mississippi on the grounds that Sean and Leigh Anne were alumni there, and Mike wanted to go to a place where his family went to school.

The film has a happy ending. Mike Oher known as the most wanted football athlete by all parties. He was happy to be part of the Tuohy family. Mike also attended the University of Mississippi according to his promise, and now Mike Oher’s name known throughout the country.

Leigh Anne Tuohy

Well, the core of the story is about Big Mike. But for me, this story really shows the character of the kind-hearted mother, Leigh Anne Tuohy. Even though you can say that she is fierce and firm in all things, Leigh Anne has a big heart.

Normally, people would let Big Mike walk alone in the middle of the night. They won’t care about Mike, considering Mike’s body is big and people can’t mess with him.

But not for Leigh Anne. Seriously, the Leigh Anne character is just what we need in the world. Always spread the love and the kindness, no matter what. A little trivia: even when Sandra Bullock found out that Leigh Anne’s character was so noble, she was a little scared to play the role. That’s because Sandra felt herself far below Leigh Anne. Awww, bless her heart!

True Story

Both the book and film are based on the true story of Mike Oher, not just Mike. The whole Tuohy family is real! Leigh Anne Tuohy really helped Mike Oher get a decent life. Leigh Anne also changed Mike’s life to the point where he became a famous football athlete.

Mike Oher’s father was killed, and as told, Mike’s mother was convicted. Mike’s mother has 12 children whose father she doesn’t even know.

This is what made social services take over custody of the 12 children, and Mike was no exception. Luckily, Mike ended up in the right hands, whereas the other brothers were not as lucky as Mike.

The film The Blind Side received a lot of awards! Call it the Academy Awards, Critic’s Choice Awards, Golden Globe Awards, Movieguide Awards, Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards, ESPY Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, People’s Choice Awards, Teen Choice Awards, and Washington, D.C.
