Films like Lovely Bones – The film “The Lovely Bones” is a fantasy-drama genre. Tells the story of Susie (Saoirse Ronan), a teenager who was mutilated by George – a middle-aged serial killer who is believed to always target women. This story is told from the perspective of Susie who has died, her spirit wanders around the area she knows.

Unforgivable (2021)

Ruth (Sandra Bullock) is described in the film as a woman who is considered to have a bad criminal history. He once shot a policeman because Ruth and his younger sister, Keith, were about to be kicked out of their own home. The policeman had been known for his “kindness” so what Ruth did was unforgivable. The public really hated him and condemned his actions.

The story line is told after Ruth gets out of prison. How he experienced various job discrimination and violence around him as a former prisoner. However, despite all the injustices she experienced, there was one thing that Ruth focused on: reuniting with her sister.

Films like Lovely Bones

Joy (Brie Larson) is a female victim of kidnapping and rape as a teenager. She was forced to bear the child resulting from her relationship with the perpetrator. For years, Joy raised her son, Jack (Jacob Tremblay), in a cramped “house” with one small window that faced the sky. This room has been their only world all this time.

This routine was so depressing that one day a crazy idea came into Joy’s head to escape. The film “Room” does not stop at the time they were free, but continues with the story of the impact of exposure to the real world that suddenly appeared on Jack’s life. “Being free” and returning to his home is Joy’s wish, but it means Jack has to redefine what the world really means.

3. The Danish Girl (2015)

Films like Lovely Bones

Tells the story of a husband and wife artist couple, Lili Elbe (Eddie Redmayne) and Gerda Wegener (Alicia Vikander) in Copenhagen, Denmark. One day, the female model Gerda usually hired to paint was unable to attend. This film is set in the 1920s so models were needed to depict realistic curves and shadows. Therefore, Lili was asked by Gerda to replace the model and the conflict in this film emerged.

Lili is described as enjoying feminine clothing so much that she began to explore make-up and fashion on her own, which at that time was still considered taboo (until now, anyway). Various internal and external conflicts arise regarding the decisions taken by Lili. However, Gerda’s character here really touches me. She accepted and supported her husband’s choice even though it meant Gerda had to give up Lili.

Once again, Eddie Redmayne’s character makes you cry. This film is based on the true story of Stephen William Hawking, a famous theoretical physicist and cosmologist who suddenly experienced amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) at the age of 21.

Throughout his life, Hawking’s illness left him paralyzed – unable to speak and forever confined to a wheelchair. Stephen met Jane and decided to stay married even though the doctor had diagnosed that he would not live beyond two years. As it turns out, Stephen lived longer than that. Although, his home life was not going as well as he thought.

5. Films like Lovely Bones: Corpse Bride (2005)

Films like Lovely Bones

As I mentioned before, I’m not a fan of sad films. However, sometimes you accidentally watch it because you are careless and don’t look at the synopsis first. One of them is “Corpse Bride” which I think tells of a wedding between two corpses. Because Victor’s form (voiced by Johnny Depp) looks deathly pale too. You know, this film tells the story of Victor, a human who accidentally makes a promise to marry a female haunting spirit, Emily (voiced by Helena Bonham Carter). Reading this synopsis might make you frown, another fantasy film. However, I’m sure you’ll enjoy it!

Victor and Emily’s character development here feels good at the end of the story. This film also does not focus on a romantic story, but on the emotion of letting go for the good. The bonus is, after watching this film, I was no longer afraid of being at home alone because I saw Emily as a ghost who was depicted as enthusiastic and adorable. Maybe you can also reduce your fear of ghosts after watching this film.
