Review, Synopsis, and Cast The Orville: New Horizons

The Orville Cast and Synopsis – Seth MacFarlane produced The Orville: New Horizons as a Hulu Original Series. The first episode, “Electric Sheep,” takes place when the U.S.S. and Orville are being repaired, following the events of the second season. In particular, Issac’s fellow machines, the Kaylon, have begun an intergalactic assault against all organic life that has already taken the lives of friends and relatives, raising tensions on board the ship regarding Issac (Mark Jackson). The situation reaches a point where the normally cool-headed Issac makes a choice that surprises the Orville crew, particularly Dr. Claire Finn (Penny Johnson Jerald), despite the best efforts of Captain Ed Mercer (MacFarlane) and first officer Commander Kelly Grayson (Adrianne Palicki).

Review The Orville: New Horizons

The Orville is making a triumphant comeback after a three-year break owing to the COVID-19 pandemic delaying production, much like Stranger Things did. That wait paid off, particularly in terms of the visual effects, since “Electric Sheep” begins with a significant space combat between the fleet of the Planetary Union and the Kaylon ships. As the Orville and its sister ships dodge the enemy’s onslaught, red and cobalt energy bolts flash through the stars.

When staging this opening, “Electric Sheep” writer-director Seth MacFarlane appears to have drawn inspiration from J.J. Abrams’s Star Trek movies. This same level of craft permeates the entire hour-long running time, including a scene in which Orville pilot Gordon Malloy (Scott Grimes) flies a sleek shuttlecraft through a training simulation. It’s obvious that Hulu offered MacFarlane a bigger budget for New Horizons, and it seems like every dollar went into creating this a visually appealing show.

Review….

The Trek analogy continues to the storyline of “Electric Sheep,” as Issac must deal with his shipmates betraying him and Finn must sort out her own emotions. MacFarlane has been quite honest about his devotion to the Star Trek series. Even in one episode of his immensely popular animated series Family Guy, Stewie Griffin kidnaps the whole Star Trek: The Next Generation cast. The Orville received both favorable and unfavorable parallels to Trek when it first aired.

However, MacFarlane’s love for the show aids him in creating something wholly original; he imbues New Horizons with the spirit of Trek and pays tribute to its setting. Additionally, despite the fact that the Star Trek franchise is currently enjoying a renaissance thanks to programs like Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Discovery (which, ironically, debuted around the same time as The Orville), New Horizons manages to distinguish itself from other sci-fi streaming services by giving its characters just as much attention as its visuals.
