For those of us who are kids of the 90s, of course we have seen that, and we are big fans of Scream.
Yes, how could I not? The slasher horror film series by Kevin Williamson (Dawson’s Creek) and directed by slasher maestro Wes Craven (A Nightmare on Elm Street) was really booming in its time.
This franchise has not only survived but thrived as a result of its success. But it also made the franchise one of the many legendary pop culture icons of all time.
Starting from the dialogue, the characters, and even the ghostface costumes, everything is very attached, both literally and non-literally, to our bodies.
Well, because we are still in the atmosphere of the latest Scream film hype, or Scream 5, and also as a tribute to Craven and his entire franchise. So let’s re-rank the top 5 hottest Scream movie releases and take a stab at them so far.

5. Scream 3 (2000)
Let’s start re-ranking the five coolest Scream movies and start with the third film in this franchise.
Many audiences and fans think that Scream 4 is the most disappointing film. Well, not for me. In fact, this film is one of my favorites. It is Scream 3, which I think is the most disappointing.
Actually, in terms of plot, there are no particularly significant formula changes. Also, the performances of all the actors are still okay. So where is the drawback? The first are the scenes of his many censored deaths.
But for this aspect, we can still understand. The reason for this was that America was still in mourning following the tragic shooting at Columbine High School at the time. Or what is also known as the Columbine High School Massacre.
However, these two shortcomings are what I cannot tolerate. Yes, as I also mentioned in the review of Scream 3, in this third film, Scream feels more “mainstream.
Or, in other words, it’s really a “popcorn flick”. Yes, it’s not wrong either. But considering that the previous 2 films didn’t look and feel more realistic, grounded, and independent, the changes in the third film are of course very disturbing.
The analogy is the same as when indie musicians or those who previously had their own style of music join in with current music trends (*cough* Ed Sheeran). But despite these shortcomings, the third film is still entertaining.
4. Scream 2 (1997)
The coolest and most piercing Scream movie so far is this sequel to the original. Actually, Scream 2 as a whole is not as disappointing as Scream 3. In fact, it’s still pretty solid, like the first film.
However, because in this ranking there are five films and, once again, the ranking is subjective, Scream 2 is inevitably in fourth place. So yeah, it’s just technical.
In addition to the actors’ appearances and stories that are still solid, the scenes or methods of death of ghostface victims are also far more hilarious and “creative.” Maybe even only in Scream 2, we can see these very “creative” murders.
As for the shortcomings of the second film, this is only related to the issue of the killer. In addition to showing two people again, one of them, Mickey Altieri (Timothy Olyphant), has a very weak motive.
He joins in helping the mother of one of the original film’s killers, Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich), Mrs. Loomis (Laurie Metcalf), pay his tuition fees. So unlike Mr. Loomis, he has no personal motives at all for his main character, Sideny Prescott (Neve Campbell).
Oh yes, maybe there’s one more drawback to this film. Sidney’s boyfriend is Derek Feldman (Jerry O’ Connell). Hadeh, this character actually helped protect Sidney from ghost-face attacks. But in the end, Sidney rescued him before Mickey shot him to death.
But despite some of these shortcomings, Scream 2 is one of the most solid and entertaining movie sequels.
3. “Scream Movies in order” Scream (2022)
Of course, like other veteran fans, I am very wary of this fifth Scream film. Because this is the first Scream film that is not directed by Craven. Also for me, Scream 4 is a reboot as well as having the perfect ending.
But yes, as you all know, Hollywood isn’t happy right now if it doesn’t revive old top film franchises. So I, as a fan, still think very positively.
After all, the new directing duo is Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Ready or Not). I am one of the fans of the movie Ready or Not. Fortunately, these positive thoughts paid off handsomely.
Indeed, this film is not the best Scream film of all time. And basically, this film, like Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), is a sequel (sequel and reboot at the same time).
But at least the two veteran franchise directors and scriptwriters, Kevin Williamson, aren’t trying to do some outlandish experimentation. Anyway, yes, they only did “semi-copy-paste” from the original film while incorporating the unique elements of the two directors.
In addition, the appearance and distribution of veteran players and new players are also very fair. Anyway, it’s really neat, i.e., there’s no sense of overlapping. Although the cast of the new generation is indeed far more prominent in this film,
Anyway, Scream 5 is a very good tribute both to us as veteran fans and to the figure of the slasher maestro, Wes Craven. You will really enjoy this film.
2. Scream 4 (2011)
Indeed, many people think that the fourth film, as well as the first sequel, is the weakest, or, in other words, they don’t like it. But yeah, I personally like it. That’s why in the discussion of the re-ranking of the Scream films, Scream 4 is placed in second place.
One of the main reasons, as stated in the review of Scream 4, is that this film was far ahead of its time at that time. Specifically, this film incorporates the concept of the Scream franchise with “predictions” of the dangers of online cultural trends.
When the film was released, social media and online culture were still in their infancy. At that time, there were not many criminal incidents due to using social media or chatting. However, this film has shown this threat, even though it is true. It is still in the context of the film as well.
But it’s like living a movie; it’s proven that what this film was alluding to or fearing has now become a reality, right? Now, apart from this aspect, there are also other aspects because this film returns to the formula of the first film, which is much simpler and more grounded.
1. “Scream Movies in order” Scream (1996)
Yep, this is the coolest and most piercing Scream film so far, even for its time. Even 25 years (26 in December 2022) after its release, the original Scream still looks and feels incredibly relevant.
It is evident that this year’s Scream 5 film is technically a reboot of the first film. So why do we still consider the original film to be the best of all over the past quarter century?
Yes, in general and as a whole, Scream is still very simple and very focused on its premise. If we compare and use a little analogy, the first Scream film is the same as its “big brother”, the film Halloween (1978).
Anyway, this first film is completely natural about a serial killer alias Ghostface who targets the main character, Sidney Prescott. So to achieve his goals and motives, this ghostly masked figure then killed all of Sidney’s close friends and family first.
Then, in the end, it will be revealed who the ghost is. The point is once again that the formula is still very simple and not messy. And it’s proven that the simple formula that this film applies has succeeded in making the film one of the biggest and most legendary film franchises to this day.
In fact, I’m willing to bet that this film will continue to maintain its relevance until this earth actually ends. So, that was the re-ranking of the five coolest and most piercing Scream films so far.
